My experience with Gabay

As early as Grade 6, I have been going to outreaches being that I have an older sister who is active in her socio-civic org, Gabay. Though I did not go to weekly visits, I know that I was prepared to be officially part of that organization and soon after, I became the first President of Munting Gabay, a mini-version of Gabay for grade school students. Ever since then, I've been attending site visits regularly. This whole experience has significantly changed my life especially with the way I view things. Being exposed to other environments have taught me to become more compassionate with others and to be more appreciative and grateful of my blessings.

Through Gabay, my love for teaching and life in itself has developed deeper thus making me view things in a very optimistic way.

I first joined Gabay two years ago, when I was a freshman in High School. Gabay is a socio-civic organization that teaches catechism to children. The one thing that caught my attention when this org was being introduced was the uniqueness of what they do. They don’t only visit orphanages or feed children and families, but they also teach Catechism to less fortunate children. I joined Gabay because I wanted to make a change in the children’s lives. When I first taught in Gabay, it was very fun and enjoyable experience. Not only were we able to teach the kids new things, but we were also able to have fun while doing it. In my two years in the organization, the experience was very fulfilling because we were able to teach the children about the faith. We were able to see how they were very eager whenever we would come to teach. Even if people say teaching is a very difficult task, I consider Gabay as my break from the stress of school because of the fascination and amazement in the children’s expressions whenever we teach them something new.

We, the teachers, also learn from the children. Because of their enthusiasm, we are motivated to teach them more each meeting. So far, my experience in Gabay has been nothing but one of learning. I learned many values that will surely aid me when I grow up and go out to the real world. I hope to learn more and at the same time, and make a difference in someone’s life.

I first started going to the out reaches sponsored by Narra in Grade 7. My very first experience was a type of mini-rurals in Balete, Batangas.  Though the actual teaching and "hands on" experience such as visiting families was only about half a day, that half a day really left a mark on me. I couldn't help but be awed by how we could touch the lives in even the simplest of ways. From then on I tried my best to get more involved in these outreach activities and that's why when I entered high school, I chose to join Gabay, a socio-civic organization where we teach catechism to children. Often times we give up our Saturdays for it and while that may seem like a lot of hard work and dedication, it's all worth it in the end. The Narra outreaches such as Gabay gave me a way to give back to the community and they also helped me get to know myself and others better. Before joining any, I had no idea that I would grow to love or even enjoy teaching but here I am today. They've taught me the skills to deal with others and myself and I'm very thankful to have been given the opportunity to join them.
